Bush Turkey
About

I built this for myself. Here it is.

I'm a builder. I work with architects and clients on new homes, and I renovate my own. Every job hits the same wall: the selections.

The problem

A house needs a few hundred decisions: wall colours, benchtops, tiles, taps, handles, cabinet boards, the roof. Each one comes from a different brand, with its own brochure, its own names and its own codes. The green the architect specified is called something else at the shop that actually stocks it. The client has screenshots, the designer has a sample board, the trades have a spreadsheet, and none of them match.

Comparing anything means driving between showrooms, digging through PDFs and reading forum threads from years ago. Most people who do this every day keep their own secret pack of favourites and cheat codes. Everyone else starts from scratch.

What this does

Bush Turkey puts every brand's finishes side by side in one place: paint, stone, joinery boards and tiles so far, with tapware next. Each item shows the code and values the brand publishes, and its closest match at the other brands, so you can choose by look and buy where it's stocked.

Then you rake your picks into a mound: a selection list sorted by room, which you can print as a schedule, download as a spreadsheet, or send as a link to your builder, designer or client, so everyone is looking at the same list.

Why it's called Bush Turkey

The Australian brush-turkey rakes a whole yard of leaves and mess into one mound, then fans its tail over it. Fan out a paint deck and you get the same shape. That's the job: a million options, raked into one pile and fanned out side by side.

It's open data

Everything here is free. No brand pays to be listed, nothing is for sale, and there are no ads. The data behind every page is open: download it and do what you like with it. Build a tool, check a spec, feed it to your AI. A link back is appreciated, never required.

  • Colour values are the ones each brand publishes. Where a brand doesn't publish one, it says so instead of guessing.
  • Trending means a brand forecast or a magazine pick, with a link to the source.
  • Forum mentions count recommendations on Reddit and renovation forums. They're mentions, not sales.
  • Closest matches are measured (ΔE 2000) from published values. Under 2 is a near twin.

Use it with your AI

Bush Turkey is built to be read by AI tools as well as people. On your mound, Copy for AI copies your whole list as a table with links, ready to paste into ChatGPT, Claude or anything else ("which of these greens has the highest LRV?", "write the schedule for my builder"). AI tools can read the whole site from llms.txt and the JSON in /data/.

Always sample

A screen is not paint. Light, sheen and the wall around it all change a colour. Use this to get down to three, then put real samples on your own wall.

Tell me what's missing

I keep this up to date because I use it. If something's wrong, a brand is missing, or you have an idea that would make choosing easier, I'd like to hear it.
