Freestanding cookers

A freestanding cooker is oven and cooktop in one, standing on the floor between the cabinets. Cheaper to install than separate built-ins, and the big 90 to 120 cm range cookers are a look of their own.

What works

60 or 90 cm for most kitchens

A 60 cm cooker suits a small kitchen or rental; 90 cm is the family size, with a bigger oven and five burners or zones.

Range cookers are a statement

The 100 to 150 cm range cookers (two ovens, six or more burners) are the centrepiece of a kitchen and priced like it. Check the floor can take the weight and the doorway can take the width.

Dual fuel

Gas burners over an electric oven. Many cooks rate it the best of both, but it needs both a gas point and a big electrical circuit.

Before you buy: Freestanding cookers need side clearance to the cabinets and a splashback rated for heat. Gas models must be installed by a licensed gasfitter. The install guide gives the gaps.
