Induction
Heats the pan, not the glass. Needs pans a magnet sticks to. Most 60 cm and larger induction cooktops need a dedicated hardwired circuit, often 32 amps: plan it before the electrician roughs in.
Induction is where the market has gone: faster than gas, easiest to clean, no open flame, and no gas line to run. Gas still wins for some cooks who wok at high heat.

Natural gas or LPG (bottled). Pick the gas type to match your supply; converting later costs money. Victoria and the ACT no longer allow new gas connections in most new homes.
A downdraft fan in the middle of the cooktop means no rangehood at all, good for islands and open plans. It takes the space of the drawer below it for the fan and ducting.
60 cm is standard, 70 to 75 cm gives four burners room to breathe, 90 cm suits five burners or a wok burner. Wider than the oven below is fine.
Before you buy: Over a gas cooktop the rangehood must sit at least 650 mm above the burners (AS/NZS 5601.1, since 2023). Some makers ask for more, and their number wins: it is in the install guide.
