Front loaders use less water and stack. Heat pump dryers cost more to buy and far less to run, need no vent, and are kind to clothes.

What works

Front load washer

7.5 to 10 kg suits most households. A front loader under a bench gives you a folding surface on top.

Heat pump dryer

The most efficient dryer, no vent to the outside, and can stack on a same-brand front loader with a stacking kit.

Stacked

Washer below, dryer above, in a 600 to 700 wide cupboard. Check the total height against the cupboard and that you can reach the dryer controls.

Top load washer

Fast cycles and no bending, but uses more water and cannot sit under a bench or stack.

Before you buy: Under a bench, the machine plus a gap must fit below the benchtop: measure from the floor to the underside of the top. Taps and the waste need to be reachable after it is in.
