Rangehoods

A rangehood should be at least as wide as the cooktop and ducted outside. Recirculating hoods filter grease but put the steam and smell back in the room.

What works

Undermount

The most common: built into the cupboard above the cooktop, so only the underside shows. Cheap, quiet in the kitchen's design, easy to duct.

Canopy

A chimney hood on the wall: a feature piece. Needs a clear wall and a straight duct up.

Island and ceiling cassette

For a cooktop in an island. An island hood hangs from the ceiling; a cassette sits flush in it. Both need ceiling space for the duct and a ceiling that can take the fixing.

Downdraft

Rises out of the bench behind the cooktop when needed. Neat, but less effective than a hood above, and it eats cabinet space below.

Before you buy: Over gas, the hood goes at least 650 mm above the burners. Plan the duct at frame stage: route, size (often 150 mm round) and where it exits the roof or wall. A long or bent duct can halve a hood's airflow.
